Our Programs and Our CreationsComme Bach

Comme Bach

J. S. Bach, F. Mendelssohn, J. Brahms

In this programme, Joël Suhubiette has imagined a concert that mirrors the music of Bach, Mendelssohn and Brahms. The works blend together without chronology, offering the listener a special, timeless musical experience.
In the midst of Bach's motets, chorales and cantata excerpts, are compositions by Mendelssohn and Brahms, a capella or with basso continuo, images of a modernity that draws its sources and inspiration from the work of the Leipzig cantor.
Bringing these three composers together is an obvious choice. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Felix Mendelssohn discovered all of Bach's music in Leipzig, particularly his vocal works, and undertook a long process of research and transcription, giving this genius of Western music the place he deserved. The discovery of this gigantic work had an enormous impact on Mendelssohn's choral writing. His cantatas, motets and oratorios were all inspired by Bach's world in terms of form, structure and the connection between text and music.
Later, another great German composer, Johannes Brahms, remained attached throughout his life to Bach's music, which also nourished his vocal and instrumental work.
By bringing together these three major figures of German music, Joël Suhubiette, the 17 singers of Les éléments chamber choir and the three instrumentalists invite us to take part in a surprising treasure hunt through time and styles.
