From New York to London

BERNSTEIN, BRYARS, CAGE, FELDMAN, FITKIN, GLASS, REICH

With short or longer works, lively or meditative, From New York to London mixes voices and keyboard percussion for a concert with different aesthetics, but all with an Anglo-Saxon approach. This first collaboration between the 5-musician ensemble Les Percussions Claviers de Lyon and the chamber choir Les elements, covers a very wide spectrum where the American minimalist trend occupies the main place.

As a prelude, some excerpts from Leonard Bernstein West Side Story were especially arranged for percussion and voice, then including works by Steve Reich, John Cage, Philip Glass and Morton Feldman. Two contemporary English composers -strongly influenced by minimalist music- complete the programme. Graham Fitkin composes Partially Screaming, a virtuoso piece with ‘magnetic’ rhythms for the Percussions Claviers de Lyon, as well as a new work for voice and percussion: People. English composer Gavin Bryars, who studied with Cage and Feldman, wrote Mistral a piece for vocal ensemble and percussion. Commissioned for this programme, the two English works that are bringing together the two ensembles were performed as a world premiere in Odyssud-Blagnac last April 2019.
