Programme

This new programme is the result of a meeting between Paul Lay and Joël Suhubiette and their desire to bring their two worlds together: that of the chamber choir Les éléments, which since 1997, under the leadership of Joël Suhubiette, has explored five centuries of a cappella music, performing oratorio and opera, and that of Paul Lay, steeped as he is in Western musical culture as much as in the Afro-American tradition, from jazz and blues to swing and gospel.
Here, Paul Lay has composed pieces for chamber choir and jazz trio, improvising on masterpieces of the choral art while illuminating them in a new light in the company of the other two members of his trio, Donald Kontomanou on drums and Clemens Van Der Feen on double bass.
Paul Lay sets poems by Emilie Dickinson, Victor Hugo, Henry Thoreau and Pablo Neruda to music, and revisits selected works from the Elements repertoire - from Purcell and Bach to Ligeti.
